Confirmation Sponsor Guidelines-

• A sponsor must be interested in the spiritual well-being of the candidate.

• A sponsor must be at least 16 years old.

• A sponsor must be fully initiated Catholic (one who has received the Sacraments of Initiation:  Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist) who “leads a life of harmony with the faith and the role to be undertaken.”

• A sponsor must not be bound by any Church penalty.

• A sponsor must participate regularly in the sacramental life of the Church including weekly Sunday Masses.

• A sponsor must not be the parent of the one who will receive the sacrament.

• It is desirable that the one who undertook the role of godparent at baptism be sponsor for Confirmation and Eucharist.

Please note the following-

• A sponsor should be someone with whom the Candidate can talk easily and who will model the faith for the Candidate.

• A sponsor who is willing to share his/her own faith story with the candidate.

• Sponsors are to be present at the Sacrament.

• Sponsors and candidates should have regular meetings.  Such as meeting once per month in a casual environment to discuss the candidate’s formation without much interruption.

• If the Sponsor lives out of town, and cannot be available for regular meetings with the Candidate they can communicate by telephone,  email or other forms of social media.  If this still is not possible, the Candidate should also choose a Mentor who can be available for the regular meetings.  The Mentor can serve as proxy if needed.

• Sponsors must provide the following:

  • A baptismal certificate and a Confirmation certificate or a Baptismal certificate with all sacraments noted on the back.                               

  • IF the sponsor is married, a church marriage certificate will need to be submitted. (Certificates can be obtained by contacting the Sponsor’s Church of Baptism as all records in the Catholic Church are held by the Church of Baptism.)                         

  • If the sponsor is not a member of this parish, the sponsor must obtain a letter of good standing from his or her parish.           

Lineamientos para los Padrinos de Confirmación

• El padrino o la madrina debe estar interesado(a) en el bienestar espiritual del candidato.

• Debe tener al menos 16 años de edad.

• Debe ser un católico plenamente iniciado (haber recibido los sacramentos de Bautismo, Confirmación y Eucaristía) que lleve una vida conforme a la fe y a la misión que va a asumir.

• No debe estar sujeto(a) a ninguna sanción canónica de la Iglesia.

• Debe participar regularmente en la vida sacramental de la Iglesia, incluyendo la asistencia semanal a la Santa Misa dominical.

• No puede ser el padre ni la madre del candidato que recibirá el sacramento.

• Es deseable que quien fue padrino o madrina de Bautismo también sea el padrino o la madrina de la Confirmación y de la Primera Comunión.

  Tenga en cuenta lo siguiente-

  • El padrino o la madrina debe ser una persona con quien el candidato pueda hablar con confianza y que sea un ejemplo de vida cristiana.

  • Debe estar dispuesto(a) a compartir su propio testimonio de fe con el candidato.

  • El padrino o la madrina debe estar presente en la celebración del sacramento.

  • El padrino o la madrina y el candidato deben reunirse con regularidad, por ejemplo, una vez al mes en un ambiente tranquilo e informal, para conversar sobre la formación del candidato sin muchas interrupciones.

  • Si el padrino o la madrina vive fuera de la ciudad y no puede reunirse regularmente con el candidato, podrá mantenerse en contacto por teléfono, correo electrónico u otros medios de comunicación. Si esto tampoco es posible, el candidato deberá elegir además un mentor, quien podrá reunirse con él regularmente y, si fuera necesario, servir como padrino o madrina sustituto(a) durante la celebración del sacramento.

  Los padrinos deben presentar lo siguiente:

  • Un certificado de Bautismo y un certificado de Confirmación, o bien un certificado de Bautismo en el que consten anotados todos los sacramentos recibidos al reverso. (Estos certificados pueden obtenerse comunicándose con la parroquia donde el padrino o la madrina fue bautizado(a), ya que en la Iglesia Católica todos los registros sacramentales se conservan en la parroquia de Bautismo.)

  • Si el padrino o la madrina está casado(a), deberá presentar también un certificado de matrimonio por la Iglesia Católica.

  • Si el padrino o la madrina no es miembro de esta parroquia, deberá presentar una carta de buena reputación (carta de buena conducta) expedida por su parroquia.
